I Believe in Jesus.
What Should I Do Next?
That’s great that you believe in Jesus! You might be wondering if there’s anything you need to do in order to “get saved” or to “get right with God.”
The good news is that you being saved is a work of God. You can’t do anything to earn your salvation – God does it all. All that you can do is recognize what God has already done in you and then respond to it.
1. Read What the Bible Says about Salvation.
Take a minute to read the following verses from the Bible: Romans 10:9-13.
If you genuinely believe in your heart that Jesus is God and that he died on the cross and rose again in order to save you from your sins, then you are already saved. Welcome to God’s family!
You now have eternal life because of your faith in Jesus (see John 3:16).
You’ve also been adopted into God’s family (see John 1:12-13).
2. Pray.
Say a prayer to God, silently or out loud, and confess to Jesus that you believe in him, that you are sorry for your sins, and that you are grateful for how he has saved you and reconciled you to God. You can say a prayer in your own words or you can say something simple like this:
God, I now believe in Jesus! I believe that he died for my sins and that he saves anyone who calls on his name. I am truly sorry for my sins and I am so grateful that Jesus has saved me. I believe that Jesus is Lord. Lord Jesus, help me to follow you and be obedient to you. Amen.
3. Tell Another Christian that You've Been Saved.
Christians are meant to be in community with other Christians. You likely already know someone who is a Christian that goes to church regularly. Get in touch with that person and let them know about your new belief in Jesus. They will very likely be so excited for you and eager to help you learn more about practicing your faith.
If there isn’t a Christian that you are comfortable reaching out to, then get in touch with a local church in your area and let them know of your new belief in Jesus. You can visit the church on a Sunday morning, call their office phone number, or send them an email.
That goes along well with this next step.
4. Start Attending a Church.
The Bible instructs Christians to meet together to study the Bible, to pray together, and to follow Jesus’ teachings. As a brand new Christian, the best place to start is by going to church along with a Christian friend or family member.
If you don’t have any friends or family members you can go to church with, start attending a local church near you.
If you live in Tucson, you can get in touch with our church here.
If you live somewhere else, go to our Find a Church page and we’ll try to help you find a healthy, local church in your area.
Whatever you do, don’t skip this step. Christians aren’t meant to be Christians in isolation. Faith is communal, not private. Find a good church and learn from the pastors and other Christians who attend there. Attending church is meant to be a blessing to you.
5. Get Baptized in Water.
The Bible commands Christians everywhere to be baptized in water (See Matthew 28:19).
In general, baptism in water is understood as a new believing Christian being immersed in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is both a sign of the new Christian being “born again” into a new life in Christ (See John 3:3), and also a sign of the new Christian’s sins being forgiven by what Jesus did on the cross (See 1 Peter 3:21).
Christians in the Bible typically got baptized in water very soon after they believed in Jesus – sometimes immediately after their salvation. (See Acts 8:35-39).
Once you believe in Jesus, seek out a church (ideally the local church that you will be attending) and tell one of the pastors or leaders that you are interested in getting baptized. Your local church can explain how they treat baptism and what the process looks like for new believers at their church.
